Lesson 5: The Dating Phase
That awkward, unnatural feeling is normal — and it doesn't last as long as you think.
So your new wig looks incredibly natural, fits well, and feels comfortable — but you're still feeling a bit uneasy about this whole wig thing?
This guide is for you. ❤️ Even the most remarkable wig requires an adjustment period. We like to call this the "dating phase" — that stretch of time when wearing a wig just feels a little awkward and unnatural.
The only way through it is to wear your wig, a lot. The more you wear it — and more importantly, the more real experiences you have while wearing it — the more confident you'll become. With time, you'll reach a point where you feel so at ease that you genuinely forget you're wearing one. And it happens faster than you'd think. 😍
Here are some steps to help you build that confidence, so wearing a wig starts to feel as easy and automatic as putting on a pair of shoes.
1. Get to know the wig itself
Take a moment to really familiarize yourself with the interior parts — the top, nape (back), sides, and ear tabs. If you need a refresher, our Lesson 2: Navigating the Wig guide covers all of this in detail. The more comfortable you are locating each part, the easier everything else becomes.
2. Practice the basics daily
For ten minutes every day, practice putting on, removing, storing, and adjusting your wig. Just like anything else, practice builds routine, and routine builds confidence. If you're not yet confident in these three things, wearing a wig day-to-day will feel harder than it needs to — so give yourself this time to really get used to your wig.
3. Wear it at home and just be you
Do the things you'd normally do. If you wear glasses, put them on and take them off. Worried about slipping? Test it at home — do yoga, go for a walk, cook, clean, walk the dog, play with your kids. Confidence only comes from experience, and testing your wig's limits somewhere safe means that when something happens out in the world, you already know what your wig can handle.
4. Take it out into the world
Once you're feeling a little more confident, wear your wig out — get coffee, go on a date, take a walk on a windy day. The goal here is to do the things you're actually scared to do. Write down your biggest fears about wearing a wig, then go test whether those fears are actually real. Most of the time, you'll find they weren't — it was mostly in your head.
5. About the fear of it slipping off
This is one of the most common fears we hear. But if your wig is fitted correctly, it won't come off — you just won't know that for certain until you've tested it. Your wig is a tool meant to work for you, not the other way around. Give yourself permission to play, take chances, and actually have fun with it.
6. Build new routines and rituals
A little planning — weekly, morning, evening — goes a long way in wig life. Learn more about building your routine here.
