Lesson 2: Navigating the Wig

For many of you, this is the first time you've really looked closely at a wig — so let's take a moment to break it down together and get you familiar with every part. Understanding the wig's construction will make it easy to confidently adjust it, even when you're out and about.

Wig Terms to Know

1. Lace Front
This is where your hairline begins. A well-designed lace front delicately recreates a natural hairline and is the only construction that allows you to wear your hair off your face. If your wig doesn't have a lace front, it's best paired with bangs. Our Stretch Lace Wig and Gripper Wig both feature a 1" soft Swiss lace front with tiny, single-knotted hairs for the most natural look.

2. Ear Tabs
The "V" or "U"-shaped sections next to your ears. Ear tabs are your main guide for positioning and adjusting your wig quickly and correctly. A well-designed ear tab sits snugly against your head, starting about one finger-width away from your ear. Ear tabs that sit too low and touch your ear can be uncomfortable and make it difficult to wear sunglasses, eyeglasses, or masks.

3. Stays
A stay is a small, bendable "L"-shaped piece located at the ear tabs and the nape of the wig. This is a crucial part of the wig — a well-designed stay holds your wig firmly in place all day without needing wig grips or adhesives.

Not all stays are created equal. Wigs made with plastic or low-quality metal won't hold their bend, leaving you without the security you need. At SPARX, we only use high-quality metal stays that hold their curve all day, so you'll never need grips or adhesives.

4. Top of the Wig
The top section, located at the crown of the head. A well-fitted wig will curve and sit flat against your head here.

5. Nape / Back of the Wig
The nape is the back edge of the wig, and should sit snugly at the base of your occipital bone — where the curve of the back of your head levels out. Since wigs naturally stretch over time, a well-designed wig includes adjustable "bra-style" hook closures so you can easily take in the circumference as needed.
