Getting Your Hairline Placement Right
Before we get into putting the wig on, let's talk about the part that matters most. This is, hands down, the hardest part of wearing a wig — and it's also the single biggest factor in whether a wig looks natural or looks like a wig. Even a flawless lace front will look off if it's placed in the wrong spot.
The rule: Your hairline should sit three to four finger-widths back from the arch (peak) of your eyebrow — regardless of where your natural hairline used to sit before hair loss, or where you think it "should" be.
Why this exact spot matters:
- Too far forward (closer than three fingers) — the wig will sit unnaturally low on your forehead. This is one of the most common first-timer mistakes, because it feels like it's "covering more" and therefore safer — but it actually reads as artificial almost immediately.
- Too far back (further than four fingers) — the wig won't anchor properly against your head shape, won't feel secure, and can shift or lift throughout the day. This isn't just an appearance issue — it's a fit and security issue too.
If you're new to wig-wearing, grab a dark eyeliner pen and mark this spot before you do anything else — three to four fingers from your eyebrow arch. This becomes your reference point every time you put the wig on, so you're not re-measuring from scratch.
How to Put On Your Wig
If you have hair, pull it back into a low ponytail, twist it, and secure it with a curved clip placed in the middle of the back of your head.
Step 1 — Clear the cap
Using your wig brush, remove any loose hair that's made its way into the cap. Hair caught inside the cap will feel itchy.
Step 2 — Position the wig
Place the wig on your lap with the top facing toward your belly.
Step 3 — Flip the nape back
Flip the nape of the wig back and away from your belly, so hair at the back doesn't get caught inside the cap.
Step 4 — Shape the stays
Locate the ear tabs and their bendable stays. Bend them inward into a "C" shape — these stays are what anchor your wig securely all day without tape or grips.
Step 5 — Place the wig
Holding the ear tabs, put the wig on and position it slightly closer to your eyebrows than you think it needs to be. It's always easier to move a wig back than to move it forward.
Step 6 — Check alignment
Adjust the ear tabs so they don't touch your ears, then place your fingers at the end of each stay. Look in the mirror — straight on, at eye level — to check that the line running across is straight.
Step 7 — Set the hairline
Gently push the ear tabs in and up, then slowly move the wig back to the mark you made earlier — three to four fingers from your eyebrow arch.
Step 8 — Adjust the back
Look up toward the ceiling and pull the nape down, positioning it right at the curve at the base of your skull.
Step 9 — Final check
Readjust the stays to make sure the wig is sitting straight. That's it — you're done!
Nine simple steps you'll master in no time. If you're new to wigs, practice putting the wig on and taking it off 20–30 times over the next couple of days — it makes a real difference in how natural it starts to feel.
How to Take Your Wig Off
Taking a wig off is easy, and doing it this way prevents hair from getting caught in the cap and keeps the lace front from stretching out. Simply grab the nape (back) of the wig and pull it up and over your head — the front should end up facing toward your belly, just like when you started. Place it on your mannequin head when you're done.
