Will My Wig Set Off Airport Security or Show Up on an MRI/CT Scan?

If you've ever wondered whether the metal in your wig could set off airport security or show up during a medical scan, you're not alone — this is one of the most common questions we hear, mostly because it's such an unknown until you've actually been through it once.

Airport Security (TSA)

It's completely normal to feel a little nervous about this before a flight, but we've never personally run into an issue. According to TSA, the metal in a hairpiece may occasionally be detected by a full-body scanner — though we use a specific metal in our stays that typically doesn't trigger one.

If the scanner does flag it, you'll simply be asked to go through a pat-down. At that point, we recommend letting the TSA officer know you're wearing a wig — it resolves the situation quickly and there's nothing to worry about.

MRI / CT Scans

If you have an MRI or CT scan scheduled, simply let your technician know ahead of time that your wig contains metal — they'll advise you on next steps based on the specific scan you're having.

Every situation is different depending on what part of the body is being scanned. For example, our founder, Allison, recently had a CT scan on her lower body and wasn't required to remove her wig at all.
