Human Hair Wig | Curated Product Guide

The right products and routine to keep your human hair wig soft, moisturized, and long-lasting.

Human hair wigs can be styled and washed just like your own hair — but unlike your natural hair, the wig can't absorb the scalp's natural oils. That means it tends to dry out and get frizzy faster over time. The key is consistently adding moisture back into the hair through oils, hydrating conditioners, and leave-in treatments. With the right routine, your human hair wig will stay soft and silky throughout its lifespan.

Three Tips to Prolong Your Human Hair Wig

  1. Use products specifically formulated for dry or damaged hair — these help keep the hair moisturized.
  2. Add moisture back into dry hair with products like argan oil.
  3. Choose sulfate-free, color-safe products. This matters more than people realize — non-sulfate-free products contain ingredients that strip the hair, making it drier and more prone to tangling or matting.

Curated Product Guide

Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner — sulfate-free, color-safe, and silicone-free, to restore the moisture your wig needs to feel soft, move naturally, and resist breakage.

  • Wella Invigo Nutri Enrich
  • Redken All Soft
  • Goldwell Rich Repair (Dualsenses)
    • Pro Tip: Be gentle with your wig — treat it like you would a newborn baby. Wig hair doesn't really get "dirty," it mostly gets dry, so only a small amount of shampoo is needed. Use cold water to keep the cuticle closed, and rinse thoroughly. Apply conditioner starting halfway down the hair to the ends, and let it sit for 15–20 minutes before rinsing. Gently wrap the hair in a towel and massage in a downward motion. Never brush a wig while it's wet — hair is 75% more elastic when wet, so brushing can split the ends and loosen the knots, causing hair loss.

Argan Oil — moisturizes and softens your wig without weighing it down.

  • Virtue Labs Healing Oil
  • Argan Oil
  • Goldwell Weightless Shine Oil

When to apply: After washing, every 2–3 days, or whenever the hair feels dry or tangles easily.
How to apply: Apply 1–2 drops to the ends and the nape of the wig, then brush through to distribute evenly. The nape often tangles more due to movement and clothing friction, so don't be afraid to add a little extra oil there.

Keep oil and conditioner away from the wig cap or base — this can loosen the knots and cause shedding. If the nape keeps tangling despite oiling, it may be your clothing — try silky fabrics, or put longer wigs in a high ponytail or braid during colder months when static and friction are worse.

Leave-In Conditioner — locks in moisture after washing.

  • Redken Leave-In Cream
  • Goldwell Air Dry BB Cream

When to apply: After the wig has air-dried for 45–60 minutes, spray onto damp hair. The key is applying it while the hair is still damp — not once it's fully dry.

Blow Dry Heat Protecting Spray — a lightweight spray that repels water, protects against heat, and speeds up drying time to help prevent breakage.

  • Quick Dry Heat Protector
  • Goldwell Brilliance Heat Protector
  • Goldwell Everyday Blow Dry
  • Kenra Blow Dry Spray

Heat damages all hair, including the hair in your wig — even after you've worked to restore its moisture, heat tools can pull that moisture right back out. Use heat tools sparingly, and always apply a heat protector first to lock moisture in before styling.

Virtue Labs 6-in-1 or Olaplex No. 4 Mask — a concentrated reparative mask that adds shine and body while providing intense moisture and smoothness.

  • How often: Once a month or two.

  • Application: Use warm water to open the cuticle. Shampoo the hair, then apply the mask. Place the wig in an airtight plastic ziplock bag. Using a hair dryer on a warm setting, heat the bag for 2–3 minutes, then let it cool in the bag overnight — this allows the cuticle to close. Rewash as normal the next morning.

K18 Repair — a leave-in treatment for colored human hair wigs that clinically reverses damage in four minutes. Its peptide technology repairs damage from bleach, color, chemical services, and heat — restoring strength, softness, smoothness, and bounce.

  • How often: Every 2–3 washes, if your wig is colored.

  • Application: Shampoo and towel-dry the hair, then apply 2–3 pumps and work through the hair. Set a timer for 4 minutes, then brush through to distribute evenly. Let the hair air dry and style as usual. Do not rinse, and do not apply conditioner after.
