How to Wash a Human Hair Wig?

Wash and restore moisture to your Human Hair wig with this step-by-step routine.

At SPARX, our human hair wigs are made with 100% premium Remy human hair, so they can be washed and styled just like your own natural hair. The one key difference: your wig can't absorb the natural oils and hydration that your scalp produces, so it dries out faster than your biological hair. That means we need to replenish that moisture regularly. The right products and routine will keep your wig soft, silky, and lasting as long as possible.

How Often Should You Wash?

If you're wearing your wig daily, plan on washing it about once a week — think of it as your weekly wash day.

Signs it's time for a wash:

  • Hair feels dry or tangles more easily than usual
  • The sides or top look flat or feel heavy (a sign of oil buildup)

How to extend your wash day: Apply a lightweight oil — we like argan oil for its subtle scent and light feel — to the ends of your wig.

  • When: After washing, then every 2–3 days after, or whenever the hair feels dry or tangled.
  • How: Apply 1–2 drops to the ends and the nape of the wig, then brush through to distribute evenly. The nape tends to tangle more from movement and clothing, so don't be shy about adding a bit extra there. Keep oil and conditioner away from the wig cap or base — it can loosen the knots and cause shedding. If tangling persists, your clothing may be the culprit — silky fabrics help, and in colder months, a high ponytail or braid can reduce tangling from friction.

Sweat & salt: Just like your natural hair, salt exposure can dry the wig out faster — if you've been active or near salty air, you may need to wash sooner than planned, or do a quick conditioner wash (wet the ends, apply conditioner, let it sit 15 minutes, rinse, and air dry).

Good to know: All SPARX wigs are double-lined, which helps keep you cool and comfortable — and also helps prevent salt and sweat from soaking into the hair, extending your time between washes.

What You'll Need

  • Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner — sulfate-free, color-safe, silicone-free. We love Wella Nutri Rich, Goldwell Rich Repair, or Milbon's Moisture line.
  • Petite rubber mannequin head — aka "home base." Petite enough not to stretch your wig, with a rubber base for pinning and a hairline outline to help you set the wig's natural dome shape.
  • Argan oil — moisturizes and softens without weighing the hair down.
  • Blow dry heat protecting spray — repels water, protects against heat, and speeds up drying to help prevent breakage.
  • Olaplex No. 4 — a concentrated reparative mask for shine, body, and moisture.
  • K18 Repair — a leave-in treatment for colored wigs that clinically reverses damage in four minutes.
  • Wig brush — flexible design for gentle detangling without pulling on knots.
  • Wig setting/teasing brush — for redirecting knots during your weekly wash and set.

Step-by-Step Guide

Be gentle — treat your wig like you're washing a baby. Excessive pulling can loosen knots and cause shedding.

Step 1 — Brush your wig
Brush the wig out fully before washing. Hair is 75% more elastic when wet, so the less brushing during the wash itself, the better.

Step 2 — Flip your wig inside out
Water is heavy, and pressure during washing can cause the hair to invert through the cap early, which feels itchy and prevents the hair from sitting flat.

Step 3 — Apply shampoo
Human hair wigs don't get "dirty" the way natural hair does, so very little shampoo is needed. Rinse the wig in lukewarm water, then massage 2–3 dollops of shampoo into the hair and cap with gentle downward motions to avoid knotting. Rinse thoroughly in lukewarm water.

Pro tip: If your wig has silicone inside the cap, apply extra water and shampoo to the hair side, since it can't reach through the cap from the other side.

Step 4 — Apply conditioner
Holding the top of the wig, apply conditioner starting halfway down the hair. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Keep conditioner away from the base/cap — it can cause knots to swell and loosen.

Step 5 — Wrap in a towel
Gently wrap the wig in a towel and massage in downward motions for about a minute.

Step 6 — Place on mannequin
Place the wig on your rubber mannequin head and let it air-dry for 45–60 minutes. Wet hair is 75% more elastic, so brushing too soon can loosen knots and cause shedding.

Step 7 — Set your wig
Secure the wig to the mannequin with wig pins. Gently brush from the ends up to the top, then put the wig on to set your part, using a teasing brush to redirect knots in the direction you want the hair to go. Take your time — however it looks on the mannequin is how it'll dry, so a bump or tucked lace front means a rewash. Let it air-dry overnight.

Step 8 — Morning prep
SPARX human hair wigs air-dry straight and smooth. Just apply 2–3 drops of argan oil to the ends and brush through with your wig brush.

If you use any heat tools, always apply a heat protector spray first — it locks in moisture and prevents the hair from drying out or becoming damaged over time.
