How to Fix a Frizzy Human Hair Wig?

An overnight deep conditioning treatment to restore softness and calm frizz.

Human hair wigs tend to get dry and frizzy over time because, unlike your natural hair, they can't absorb the oils and hydration your scalp produces. The best fix for frizzy, dry hair is an overnight deep conditioning treatment.

What You'll Need

  • Deep conditioning mask — we like:
  • Wella Invigo Nutri-Enrich Deep Nourishing
  • Redken Extreme Mask
  • Virtue Labs Restorative Treatment Mask
  • Ziplock bag
  • Hair dryer
  • Petite rubber mannequin head — aka "home base." Petite enough not to stretch out your wig, with a rubber base for pinning and a hairline outline to help you set the wig's natural dome shape.
  • Wig brush — flexible design for gentle detangling without pulling on hair or knots.
  • Wig setting/teasing brush — for redirecting knots during your wash and set.

Step-by-Step Guide

Be gentle — treat your wig like you're washing a baby. Excessive pulling can loosen knots and cause shedding.

Step 1 — Brush your wig
Brush the wig out fully before washing. Hair is 75% more elastic when wet, so the less brushing during the process, the better.

Step 2 — Flip your wig inside out
Water is heavy, and pressure during washing can cause the hair to invert through the cap early, which feels itchy and keeps the hair from sitting flat.

Step 3 — Apply shampoo
Human hair wigs don't get "dirty" the way natural hair does, so only a small amount of shampoo is needed. Rinse the wig in lukewarm water, then massage 2–3 dollops of shampoo into the hair and cap with gentle downward motions. Rinse thoroughly in lukewarm water.

Pro tip: If your wig has silicone inside the cap, apply extra water and shampoo to the hair side, since it can't reach through the cap from the other side.

Step 4 — Apply the deep conditioner mask
Holding the top of the wig, apply the mask starting halfway down the hair, then place the wig inside a plastic ziplock bag.

Step 5 — "Sweat" the hair
Using your hair dryer on a hot setting, blow hot air over the bag for 4–5 minutes. This opens the hair's cuticle so the mask's moisturizing ingredients can absorb fully.

Step 6 — Let it rest overnight
After 4–5 minutes of heat, turn off the dryer and leave the wig in the ziplock bag overnight. This lets the hair cool slowly, which closes the cuticle back up.

Step 7 — Rinse in the morning
Simply rinse the mask out the next morning.

Step 8 — Wrap in a towel
Gently wrap the wig in a towel and massage in downward motions for about a minute.

Step 9 — Place on mannequin
Place the wig on your rubber mannequin head and let it air-dry for 45–60 minutes. Wet hair is 75% more elastic, so brushing too soon can loosen knots and cause shedding.

Step 10 — Set your wig
Secure the wig to the mannequin with wig pins. Gently brush from the ends up to the top, then put the wig on to set your part, using a teasing brush to redirect knots in the direction you want the hair to go. Take your time — however it looks on the mannequin is how it'll dry, so a bump or tucked lace front means a rewash. Let it air-dry overnight.

Step 11 — Prep and go
SPARX human hair wigs air-dry straight and smooth. Just apply 2–3 drops of argan oil to the ends and brush through with your wig brush.
