How to Dye a Human Hair Wig?

Yes — you can dye or tone your SPARX human hair wig. We do not recommend bleaching it.

Our Remy human hair can absolutely go darker or be toned to a new shade. What we don't recommend is bleach: the hair has already been processed once at the manufacturer, and adding bleach on top of that can damage the cuticle in a way that's difficult to reverse. Instead, we recommend starting with the lightest shade you'd want as a highlight, then having a professional colorist add lowlights with a darker dye to build the depth you're looking for.

The product we recommend

If you're coloring or toning your human hair wig or topper, use the Redken Acidic Color Gloss. Apply the gloss before and after the color process, then follow with the leave-in conditioner. Continue using the shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in from the kit until the products are used up — this helps the cuticle close back down properly, which keeps the hair relaxed and closer to its original condition.

A few things to know before you start

1. Always test a strand first. The back-middle section is ideal — it's the most hidden if something doesn't go as planned.
2. Work with a professional colorist. Any time you're coloring hair that's already been processed, professional hands make a real difference.
3. Use a semi- or demi-permanent color with a low-volume developer. Stick to 10 volume — it deposits color without lifting the hair or opening the cuticle further, which is what you want here.
4. Work in small sections. Apply dye to both sides of each section and keep a consistent downward direction to avoid tangling.

A note for the Sport Wig

If you're dyeing or toning your Sport Headband Wig, the headband itself won't change color — you're using hair dye, not textile dye, so it only affects the hair. If you'd rather not take any chances, wrap the headband in foil and tuck the ends in just below it before you start, then rinse thoroughly when you're done.
